Ultraman Trigger, Tsuburaya Productions’ latest Ultraman series, is set to premiere on Ultraman Day, July 10, 2021, on the TV Tokyo Network in Japan. In anticipation of its debut, Tsuburaya Productions is proud to announce the main cast of Ultraman Trigger including some of the most important members of the expert team GUTS-Select. These characters will appear alongside star Raiga Terasaka playing GUTS-Select recruit Kengo Manaka.
The Sizuma Foundation, TPU (Terrestrial Peaceable Union) & GUTS-Select
A private Foundation operating on a global scale, the Sizuma Foundation was founded by Mitsukuni Shizuma for the betterment of society. The Sizuma Foundation is currently on the forefront of Space Exploration and Extraterrestrial Archeology. Through his archeological research, Mitsukuni found evidence of a dark power that would threaten the Earth, and so he formed the TPU to stand up against this impending threat. “GUTS-Select” is the name of the expert team formed within the TPU.
Speaking of GUTS-Select…
GUTS-Select heroine Yuna Shizuma will be played by Runa Toyoda!
Runa Toyoda has been chosen to play Yuna Shizuma, the latest in a long line of heroines in the Ultraman series and a member of GUTS-Select.
The esteemed daughter of Mitsukuni Shizuma, Yuna is a talented young woman who has received a privileged education from a young age. She will contribute to the expert team’s fight against Kaiju attacks in many ways. Despite her exciting career, Yuna also leads a life as a regular 17-year-old high school student. As the instructor for GUTS-Select rookie Kengo, Yuna is sure to be seen working side by side with the new recruit often.
Runa Toyoda had this to say about her role:
Yuna is a bright and ingenious girl, and yet she has a strong sense of conviction within her. She and I are similar in some ways, and I hope to discover more of the qualities that we share as her character develops.
This series is a story filled with hope, and with quirky characters that are bound to make its viewers smile. That is the kind of series that you can look forward to. I will give it my all to deliver courage and happiness to all generations, from children to grandparents, as Yuna Shizuma.
I hope you are all really excited for Ultraman Trigger, and thank you for your support!
Shunya Kaneko will play GUTS-Select engineer Akito Hijiri!
Shunya Kaneko will play Akito Hijiri, the rival of protagonist Kengo, and the genius engineer of GUTS-Select.
Akito is in charge of development at GUTS-Select and possesses genius-level intelligence. He is responsible for the design and development of various GUTS-Select vehicles and gadgets, including Kengo’s transformation item, the GUTS Sparklence (which bears a striking similarity to the Sparklence from Ultraman Tiga), GUTS Hyper Keys, and the Nursedessei spacecraft. Valued for his rare talents by the chairman of the Sizuma foundation Mitsukuni, Akito attends the same high school as Yuna, with whom he grew up and harbors a slight crush on.
Shunya Kaneko commented on his role and history with the Ultraman series, saying:
I started watching Ultraman, Ultraseven, and Ultraman Leo because of my parents. Since I was small, Ultraman has always been by my side to grant me courage. This year is the 55th anniversary of Ultraman and the 25th anniversary of Ultraman Tiga. I’m honored to be performing in such an anniversary year.
While I am feeling the pressure, I’m also excited about the world of the new Ultraman Trigger, which starts soon. I will do my best to bring inspiration and courage to everyone who watches.
Nursedessei Pilot Tesshin Sakuma will be played by Tadashi Mizuno!
Tesshin Sakuma is the pilot of the giant GUTS-Select anti-monster mothership called “Nursedessei.” Fans are sure to recognize Mizuno from his appearance in Ultraman Geed as the store manager of “Galaxy Market,” but this time Mizuno will be playing a hot-blooded pilot!
A master pilot who pilots the 40-meter anti-monster battleship Nursedessei, Tesshin is a muscle-bound fitness nut who can be extremely hot-blooded. He tends to have a lack of awareness in terms of personal space, much to the annoyance of Akito. Tesshin isn’t the type to emphasize strict hierarchical relationships and is very direct with the rookie Kengo, earning his esteem as a sort of mentor.
Tadashi Mizuno said about his role in the show:
Every day I am struck by how happy I am to be returning to the world of Ultraman for its 55th anniversary. I felt the passion in X, formed bonds in Geed, and this time in Trigger I will be bringing the love and take on the series and its monsters together with my wonderful, incredible comrades!
We are all working together as hard as we can to ensure that everyone from new viewers to longstanding fans of Ultraman and tokusatsu will enjoy the show!
The epic Nursedessei is an anti-monster battleship that doubles as the mobile base of operations for GUTS-Select. This gigantic ship is 40 meters long and equipped with a large-scale charged particle cannon, known as the “Nurse Cannon,” on its starboard side.
Designed by Akito, the Nursedessei is the culmination of all of the Terrestrial Peaceable Union’s resources and development. In addition to its bridge, which functions as a mobile command center, it houses rooms for each of the members as well as Akito’s lab, where mysterious stone slabs excavated from the ruins of the Ultra-Ancient civilization are analyzed.
The Nursedessei houses many other secrets and features too, and if fans examine the name closely, they will find that it is a portmanteau of the battleship from Ultraman Tiga known as the “Artdessei” and a particularly draconic “Nurse” who originally appeared in Ultraseven…
Battle Mech GUTS Falcon Operations Specialist Himari Nanase will be played by Meiku Harukawa!
Himari Nanase holds the title of “Falcon Specialist” within GUTS-Select, and pilots the GUTS Falcon remotely from the Nursedessei’s bridge. Fans may recognize Harukawa from Ultraman Ginga S, in which she played one of the survivors of the outcast Victorians, and delivered us an impressive action spectacle in episode 6 alongside protagonists Hikaru and Sho.
An operations specialist who controls the combat mech GUTS Falcon, Himari is a cool beauty who looks great in glasses. Always calm and collected, she is a woman of few words, and she completes her tasks silently with a lingering look of indifference. However, the moment she sits in the control chair of the GUTS Falcon and dons her VR goggles her personality changes drastically, and we see a glimpse of a passionate fire that is the opposite of her day-to-day persona.
Meiku Harukawa commented about her role and experience with the Ultraman series, saying:
Ginga S taught me the most fundamental point of filming, that “the camera mustn’t stop just for you”.
7 years since then, moving from underground to the control room, I’ve come back again to the world of Ultraman! I’m Meiku Harukawa, and I will play Himari Nanase, the operator of the GUTS Falcon. From the rather unique position of the control chair, I will have a very, very exciting challenge ahead of me.
I have no doubt whatsoever that this will be an exciting story which will develop its characters (and monsters) to show not only the coolness of its heroes, but also highlight the tenderness and the charm of its characters too. I will do my best to get on board both the Falcon, and also on board with fan’s hopes for the series!
The GUTS Falcon is a combat mech docked aboard the mobile mothership of expert team GUTS-Select, the Nursedessei. Falcon Specialist Himari pilots the GUTS Falcon remotely from the Nursedessei’s bridge. It is a special convertible mech with two forms; the “flight mode” is its standard aircraft form for flying quickly to the field, and the chassis converts into “hyper mode” for combat against monsters low in the air or on-land.
